NEW FAMILY HOME

ABOUT THIS FAMILY HOME

The challenge of creating a house of this size within the confines of the site curtilage was a complex task, but with the support of the planning authorities, the final design has resulted in a residence that is nearly twice the size of the original building it replaced. This expansion was achieved while respecting the surrounding environment, the established site features, and the need for privacy and aesthetics.

The new house in Oxford is anchored within the existing mature gardens, which form an integral part of the overall design. One of the key features of the property is its south-facing frontage, which allows the house to benefit from an abundance of natural light throughout the day. This aspect is particularly important for the indoor living spaces, as it provides warmth and a strong connection to the garden outside. In addition to the sunlight, the design ensures that the majority of the garden remained open to the public, preserving the historical and cultural value of the grounds while allowing residents to enjoy privacy and seclusion in their own space.

To achieve this balance, the T-shaped design of the house was carefully chosen. The layout creates a secluded rear garden, offering an intimate outdoor space that provides a sense of tranquillity and retreat. This rear garden serves as an oasis for the homeowners, providing a peaceful escape from the surrounding environment and a place to enjoy nature in privacy. The T-shape of the building also ensures that the larger living areas are oriented towards the more private sections of the garden, while the public-facing front of the house maintains a more open and accessible appearance.

In terms of the architectural style, the design incorporates a high level of detail in both the structure and the fabric of the house. From the moment one enters the building, the bespoke design elements become apparent. The wooden stair panelling, crafted with precision and care, serves as a focal point in the entrance hall. This detail adds warmth and texture to the space, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The underfloor wine cellar, another thoughtful design feature, combines functionality with luxury, offering a unique and practical element to the home.

The oval hallway further enhances the design, serving as a graceful transition between the different areas of the house. The curved shape of the hallway contributes to the overall fluidity of the design, creating a sense of openness and continuity throughout the interior spaces. The use of natural materials is also evident in the juxtaposition of green oak posts with the ashlar and brick façades, which creates a striking contrast. The green oak posts add a rustic, organic quality to the structure, while the ashlar and brick bring a sense of permanence and elegance to the overall design.

Each of these design elements comes together to form a home that is not only functional but also rich in character and style. The house successfully blends modern living with traditional materials and techniques, creating a space that feels both timeless and contemporary. The careful consideration of the site, the integration of natural light, and the attention to architectural detail all contribute to making this new home a unique and special place.
