SOBELL HOUSE
ABOUT SOBELL HOUSE
We were privileged to design the extension for Sobell House Hospice in Oxfordshire, a project driven by the ever-growing need for enhanced palliative care services. The decision to expand was motivated by the increasing number of patients, particularly those with complex conditions like dementia, who require specialised, compassionate care. The aim of this extension was not only to create a space that meets these medical and practical needs but also to offer an environment that promotes comfort, dignity, and tranquillity for patients and their families during some of life’s most challenging moments.
The layout of the new extension was carefully conceived to optimise both functionality and comfort. On the ground floor, the space is purposefully divided into six new patient bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom to ensure privacy and facilitate the highest standard of personal care. These rooms are designed with thoughtful details that cater to the unique needs of palliative patients, providing a calming atmosphere where they can receive tailored care. Additionally, a new Lymphedema clinic has been integrated into the ground floor, expanding the hospice’s capacity to offer specialised treatment for patients dealing with chronic conditions that require ongoing management and attention.

The first floor of the extension has been designated to support the staff and the operational needs of the hospice. It features modern changing rooms and welfare facilities for the dedicated team members who work tirelessly to deliver exceptional care. Beyond these essential amenities, the first floor also houses the hospice’s charitable offices and administrative spaces. This integration allows for streamlined operations, fostering better communication and collaboration among the teams that manage the hospice’s functions, from patient care to fundraising and community outreach.

The architectural design of this extension prioritises the infusion of natural light, creating an uplifting and inviting space for everyone who enters. A large, double-height window is one of the most striking features of the design, providing an expansive view of the nearby golf course. This visual connection with the outdoors adds a sense of openness and serenity to the interior, contributing to an environment that feels less clinical and more homelike, which is vital for palliative care settings. The light-filled interiors play a significant role in enhancing the well-being of patients, staff, and visitors alike.

Another notable aspect of the design is the layout’s emphasis on external views, particularly of the courtyard garden. This garden, which has been preserved and enhanced as part of the extension project, serves as a peaceful, private haven where patients and their loved ones can spend time together. The enclosed nature of the garden provides a safe, intimate space that complements the calm, restorative atmosphere of the hospice itself. The importance of such spaces cannot be overstated, as they offer moments of respite and connection that are invaluable in palliative care.

The photographs capturing the finished building, shared courtesy of Kingerlee Ltd —the contractor responsible for bringing the project to life—and Working Images, highlight the successful realisation of our vision. These images showcase not only the thoughtful architecture but also the profound impact of creating spaces that marry functionality with comfort and aesthetic grace. The extension at Sobell House Hospice stands as a testament to our commitment to designing environments that prioritise the well-being of both patients and those who care for them, ensuring that dignity and compassion remain at the heart of the hospice experience.
