SUMMERTOWN VILLA

ABOUT SUMMERTOWN VILLA

A unique Regency villa located in North Oxford was nearly lost to redevelopment, but thanks to a determined campaign by local residents, it was granted a Grade II* Listing, safeguarding its future. The property was subsequently purchased by our client to serve as a family home, ensuring that this significant building would continue to play a role in the area’s architectural heritage. This villa holds an important place in North Oxford’s history, and as such, extensive research into both the building and its surrounding gardens was carried out to fully understand its past and preserve its character.

During the design process, there was a strong emphasis on working collaboratively with key stakeholders, including the City Council’s Conservation Officer and English Heritage. This close partnership helped ensure that the restoration maintained the integrity of the property’s original features while also adapting the space to meet the needs of a modern family. The approach focused on blending historical preservation with the creation of a contemporary living environment that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The restoration was meticulous, with every detail carefully considered to respect the property’s historical significance. The design team was dedicated to retaining the original elements of the villa, such as intricate mouldings, fireplaces, and the unique characteristics of the exterior. However, the property was also transformed into a comfortable family home, with updates that included modern amenities and spaces tailored for family life, while ensuring these elements harmonised with the villa’s traditional charm.

A key aspect of the project’s success was the close working relationship between our client, Gray Baynes + Shew, interior designer Hugh Leslie, and the builder, Symm & Co. Each party brought their own expertise to the table, ensuring that the final result was a seamless blend of historical restoration and modern design. The interior design, led by Hugh Leslie, reflected the elegance and sophistication of the Regency period while introducing contemporary touches that complemented the villa’s architectural style. The builder, Symm & Co, demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship, paying careful attention to every detail to bring the design to life.

The result is a home that not only respects the history of the property but also meets the practical needs of a family living in the 21st century. The villa has been transformed into a much-loved family home that celebrates both its past and its future. The project stands as a testament to the success of collaborative design and conservation efforts, showcasing how historical properties can be sensitively restored and adapted for modern use. This careful balance of tradition and innovation is what makes this Regency villa in North Oxford such a unique and cherished family home.
