ABOUT THIS YMCA PROJECT

The YWCA Central Club charity, founded in 1932, had previously been based in Portland Place but sought to relocate to a more modern facility to better accommodate its growing needs. After acquiring the building, the YWCA appointed Gray Baynes + Shew, a renowned architectural firm, to oversee the conversion of the office space into a vibrant headquarters. This transformed space is now known as "The Bridge" and serves as a hub for the charity’s various services and initiatives.

The decision to repurpose the building was driven by the need for a larger, more versatile space that would reflect the YWCA's mission of empowering women and providing essential community services. By transforming a former office building into a dynamic and welcoming environment, the YWCA aimed to create a multifunctional space that would support a range of activities and provide a focal point for both members and the wider community.

The Bridge was officially opened by Lucy Shuker, Britain's top female wheelchair tennis player, who is also a prominent advocate for inclusivity and the empowerment of women and disabled individuals. Her involvement in the opening ceremony highlighted the central values of the charity and its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity in all aspects of its work.

The newly renovated space includes a range of facilities designed to support the physical, mental, and professional wellbeing of its users. On the ground floor, there is a restaurant and café that not only serves the members of the YWCA but also the local community. This communal space fosters connection and offers a welcoming environment for both relaxation and socialising. The restaurant and café provide healthy meal options, making it an integral part of the overall wellbeing focus of the building.

In addition to the café, The Bridge boasts a fully equipped gym and exercise studio. These spaces are designed to support a wide range of fitness activities and cater to the diverse needs of the members. The gym and studio are complemented by well-maintained changing rooms and shower facilities, ensuring that users have access to all the amenities they need for a comfortable and fulfilling fitness experience.

Beyond fitness, The Bridge also features offices, training rooms, and seminar spaces, making it a central location for professional development and educational opportunities. These areas are used for a variety of purposes, including workshops, training sessions, and community seminars. The versatility of these rooms enables The Bridge to host a range of activities that align with the YWCA’s mission of empowerment, education, and advocacy.

Additionally, The Bridge offers wellbeing treatment rooms that provide therapeutic services to members, contributing to the overall health and wellness focus of the space. These rooms offer a peaceful and private setting where individuals can receive treatments designed to improve their physical and emotional well-being, further reinforcing the charity's commitment to holistic care for women and the broader community.

Overall, the transformation of this office building into The Bridge is a testament to the YWCA’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for women and their families. With its diverse range of facilities, The Bridge serves as a beacon of empowerment, wellness, and community.
